Nita Pass Second Observatory
After a short drive along the Nita Pass Loop Road, you will reach the Nita Pass Second Observatory. From this observatory, you can see the lava dome of Mt. Fugendake, which has developed inside the Myoken Caldera created by a massive collapse of Myoken Volcano about 27,000 years ago, as well as the lava dome of Mt. Heisei Shinzan. On the Mt Heisei Shinzan, which is the youngest mountain in Japan, steep slopes created by pyroclastic flows and taluses extend eastwards and they makes a desolate landscape. On a clear day, you can see the areas affected by the pyroclastic and debris flows, as well as the training dikes for protecting the towns from debris flows extending to the sea.
