Motobira Stone Bridge

In Kita-arima town, Minamishimabara City, there are several beautiful stone bridges. Among them, a group of 5 stone bridges over a tributary of Arima River, namely Motobira Bridge, Omonashi Bridge, Aretashimo Bridge, Tanaka Bridge, and Sakashita Bridge, represent the modernization of the region and were designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Nagasaki Prefecture as "Five Stone Bridges of Arima" on 14 February 1991.
Andesite was used for Omonashi Bridge, which is considered to have been built in the late Edo period (1603-1868), and basalt was used for the other 4 bridges, which were built in Meiji era (1868-1912) and Taisho era (1912-1926). One of the reasons for the development of stone bridges in this area is that the lava rocks as suitable materials for building stone bridges were easily available.
