Miyama-kirishima (Kyushu Azalea) in Ikenohara Area

Ikenohara is located 800 meters above sea level and is home to clusters of Miyama-kirishima (Kyushu azalea). Miyama-kirishima is 1.0-1.5 meters tall and has thick branches covered densely with gamopetalous flowers of 4-5 centimeters wide. The colors of flowers are beautiful with different tones from scarlet, vermilion, red to crimson. Miyama-kirishima is a semi-evergreen shrub of the azalea family, unique to the volcanic regions of Kyushu (Kirishima, Aso, Kujyu, and Unzen). This site is of high value as a main area of Miyama-kirishima clusters.
